Humanities

The area of Humanities focuses upon geography; history; religion, values and ethics; business studies and social studies.                Humanities embeds the Four purposes throughout, enabling learners to develop within every purpose.                                                Humanities enables learners to enquire about the world around them, to investigate and explore, whilst also developing a deeper understanding of their own locality, past and present and communicate their findings effectively in a variety of ways.                        Humanities enables learners to reflect on their own actions and those of others, respecting viewpoints, engaging with local and global issues such as sustainability, enabling learners to develop in confidence and collaborate with others.                                        Humanities provides opportunities to develop Literacy skills, Numeracy skills and Digital competence, critical thinking and problem solving whilst, providing authentic links with Expressive arts and Health and Well-being.

What Matters in Humanities is represented in 5 statements:
  • Enquiry, exploration and investigation inspire curiosity about the world, its past, present and future.
  • Events and human experiences are complex, and are perceived, interpreted and represented in different ways.
  • Our natural world is diverse and dynamic, influenced by processes and human actions.
  • Human societies are complex and diverse, and shaped by human actions and beliefs.
  • Informed, self-aware citizens engage with the challenges and opportunities that face humanity, and are able to take considered and ethical action.
Progression in Humanities:
  1. Increasing breadth and depth of knowledge.
  2. Deepening understanding of the ideas and disciplines within areas of learning and experience.
  3. Refinement and growing sophistication in the use and application of skills.
  4. Making connections and transferring learning into new contexts.
  5. Increasing effectiveness as a learner.

Humanities is central to learners becoming ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world.
